This is the national flag of Okinawa which is called "the Flag of the International Bridge" and the design is based on the inscription on the Bell of the International Bridge at the Main Building of the Syuri Palace.
The inscription on the Bell of the International Bridge (also the national anthem of Okinawa) is:
The Ryukyu Kingdom:
is the strategic point on the south sea;
calls excellences among the three kingdoms of Korea;
relates the Great China cheekbones and the gums;
relates the Japanese Area lips and tooth;
is emerging paradise islands locates between these two;
makes a ship the international bridge;
is filled with the rarest and the greatest treasure;
the land is little hot, people fan Confucian virtue of Japan and China.
....
The flag has two deep-blue strips on the top and the bottom. Regarding them as the upper and the lower jaws, they symbolize relationship between the Okinawa and the China (cheekbones and the gums).
There is Hinomaru (the rising sun) in the center overlapping with the gate of the right conduct symbolizing Okinawa. That is the relationship between Okinawa and Japan (lips and tooth). In this regard, you do not make fun of Okinawa sticking out of Japan if it means Okinawa is bucktoothed. She is smiling that why both lips and tooth are both seen.
Excellences among the three kingdoms of Korea is, well this is difficult. Notice the colors of the flag and ignore the white background as colorless, there are three colors. Blue, red and green. They represent three kingdoms in the ancient Korea.
The strategic point on the south sea is, back to the central Hinomaru, codified by the sun. Consider this the sun in the south rather than the symbol of Japan.
Making a ship the international bridge is, see the two strips which is also used for the China. They are deep-blue, apparently for the wakes behind a ship. A wake reaches form side to side certainly connecting both sides as a bridge.
The kingdom filled with the rarest and the greatest treasure is shown by the gate of the right conduct symbolizing Okinawa filled by green.
Still missing is the paradise islands. The words on the tablet of the gate of the right conduct, "the nation of the right conduct" is an another name for the paradise.
(The rest is omitted.)
Such being the case, everything on the flag embodies the maxim of "the international bridge" and the flag is called the Flag of the International Bridge.
